NBM Women’s Premiership action returns

The National Bank of Malawi (NBM) Women’s Premiership returns to action this weekend after a two-week break due to some international engagements involving the Scorchers and Kukoma Ntopwa Women.

The Women’s National Football Team played Lesotho in two friendly matches in Blantyre while Ntopwa Women were competing in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Women’s Champions League Cosafa Qualifiers in South Africa.

This Saturday, MDF Lioness will face Ntopwa at Champions Stadium in Mponela, Dowa while Moyale Sisters will be taking on MK Academy at Mzuzu Stadium.

On Sunday, three exciting fixtures, including crackers between hosts Mighty Wanderers Queens and leaders Silver Strikers Ladies at Mpira Stadium in Blantyre, are on the menu.

The other sizzling clashes will see Lilongwe giants Ascent Academy facing FCB Nyasa Bullets Women and Topik Academy taking on Civil Service Women at Mzuzu Stadium.

National Women’s Football Association general secretary Lustica Gondwe said: “We expect fireworks as the league matches resume. Entry at all these matches is free and we urge soccer lovers to patronise games at their nearest venues and enjoy the action.”

Currently, Silver Strikers Ladies are the only unbeaten side in the inaugural 10-team national league, where they are on top with 12 points from four-straight wins and are the side with the most goals scored, having slotted in 14.

Silver Ladies coach Andrew ‘Aluki’ Chikhosi said: “We are determined to keep our unbeaten record as we get back to business this weekend.”

The Central Bankers are three points above second-placed Ascent, third-placed Ntopwa Women and fourth-positioned Wanderers Queens, who are tied on nine points but are separated on goal difference.

Bullets Women are fifth with seven points, Lioness are sixth with five points and Civil Women are seventh on three points.

MK Academy and Moyale Sisters are tied on a single point but are eighth and ninth, respectively, due to goal difference while Topik anchor the table without a point after losing all their four games.

On the scorers’ chart, Silver Ladies’ striker Deborah Henry and Ascent’s Leticia Chinyamula are on top with a tie on five goals apiece. They are closely followed by Bullets Women’s Mary Chavinda and

Vanessa Issa, Ntopwa’s Kondawo Banda and Ascent’s Mayamiko Mkandawire on three goals each.
